Product Description

This is a single origin black tea from the Himalayas in eastern Nepal, grown just across the boarder from Darjeeling, India.

Just like Darjeeling teas, the terroir (high mountains, steep terrain, well-drained soil, extreme cold and intense heat, as well as a good level of rainfall) of the Himalayas is a major contributor to the character and floral aroma of this Nepalese tea.

Himalayan Tea also goes through a unique production process to ensure that it maintains its bright, lively, fresh and uplifting flavour:

  • The leaves are briefly withered under warm (not hot) air, and then rolled to bruise the cell walls evenly
  • The leaves are spread out and left to oxidize, until they reach the point where the tea producer notes that the smell and look of the tea is ‘just right’ (this is a very human process, without a set clock or temperature/humidity controlled conditions)
  • Once perfectly oxidized the leaves are fired at a medium temperature for about 30 minutes to reduce moisture and preserve the flavour and aroma at this stage
  • Using only warm air and medium firing ensures that the Himalayan tea creates a cup that retains strong floral notes, without any harshness
  •

This single origin tea provides a great bang for your buck. Great for Darjeeling lovers who are looking for a flavour variation, or for those who don’t love the strong muscatel of 2nd Flush Darjeeling but are still looking for a black tea that can stand on its own.
