Shade Grown Arabica Coffees
Murchie's only purchase the choicest selection of high grown prime
crops of quality hard bean Arabicas that have been planted as high as
possible above sea level.
To assure a good crop, these gardens require a method of shielding the
ripening coffee cherries from the scorching heat of the sun. Large,
wide-leafed trees are planted amongst the Arabica coffee trees. Banana
trees are the usual choices as their large fronds waving in the
breezes create the perfect shield while allowing enough heat through
to ripen the cherries.
DID YOU KNOW?
Arabica Coffee Cherries do not ripen all at once..their branches
hold blossoms, green cherries, partially ripened cherries and ripe
cherries all at the same time.therefore, they really do require
picking by hand! The workers go back many times to finish the picking
and are paid only for the baskets of ripened red cherries.
Robusta - coffee cherries - all ripen at the same time and do not
require the type of cultivation that an Arabica Coffee tree
requires..in fact; the Robusta type coffee tree will produce cherries
even in adverse weather conditions. The cherries can therefore, are
blown off and gathered at one time, at a far lower cost. Robusta type
coffee beans are added to over 95% of the roasted coffees available -
as they are up to 2/3 cheaper than a low cost Arabica Coffee green
bean. They also have far more caffeine in the cup. This lowers the
cost of the coffee and adds the additional 'kick' of caffeine. No one
would sell pure Robusta..not a good taste!
Note: Health Canada, U.S. and Medical statistics on the 'amount' of
caffeine in a cup of coffee NEVER differentiates between a pure
Arabica cup of coffee and a blend of Arabica mixed with Robusta.
Murchie's guarantee than no Robusta coffee beans are ever purchased.

Over 100 Years old: The No. 10 Tea Blend Still on Top
Award winning blend of green and black teas is still a top seller for Murchie's.
The No 10 blend, named after the famous No 10 Downing Street in London, is a mild, sweet blend of green and black teas. Grandfather John Murchie's unconventional tea blending ideas resulted in one of Murchie's most famous blends. Although, other tea experts balked at his unusual method of blending green and black teas together, he obviously did something right because over 100 years later we are still blending this delectable tea which remains one of our best sellers.
